A brand new blue 2024 Ford Mustang GTD making a special appearance at South OC Cars and Coffee at the Outlets at San Clemente. Introduced in August 2023, the GTD is a street-legal version of the Mustang GT3 race car. Based on the seventh-generation (S650) Mustang, it is the fastest and most powerful production Mustang with a top speed of 202 mph and a 5.2-liter supercharged V8 engine producing 815 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque. It features revised bodywork made mostly of carbon fiber, a rear-mounted transaxle, Brembo carbon ceramic brakes, and an active aerodynamic Drag Reduction System. The limited-production GTD has a starting price of $325,000, and all allocations have already been sold through a special application process.

I never thought there'd come a day when I'd drag myself out of bed early just to see a Mustang. Honestly, Mustangs are great cars, and I wouldn't mind owning one if it weren't for the inseparable association with idiot drivers and illegal takeovers. At exotic car gatherings, these are the cars whose insecure owners wish they had something worthy of attracting attention and compensate by performing stunts that endanger the public and give car enthusiasts in general a bad rap. But now, with the Blue Oval's latest contestant in the never-ending Ford v. Ferrari saga, there's a Mustang priced like a McLaren 750S with supercar-rivaling power and a level of exclusivity that puts all those attention-seeking fools to shame.

Over a decade ago Lexus had trouble selling all 500 of its LFAs simply because many people wouldn't spend over $300K on what's essentially a Toyota. Well, now we have a $300K+ Mustang, and apparently all planned units have already been sold. This reminds me of Porsche's GT3 RS and various 911 special editions, where extreme models cost several times more than the base car yet have no trouble finding buyers. Like the RS, the Mustang GTD is more beast than beauty; it looks much better in person thanks to its low and wide stance, but there are just so many vents plastered everywhere that it looks more like a crazy aftermarket project than a high-end factory model. Of course, given the GTD is essentially a street-legal GT3 race car with all sorts of track-focused engineering beneath its skin, the wild bodywork is only expected. And the more you pay attention to the car's fine details, the more clearly you see that this is much, much more than just another suped-up 'Stang. At around ten times (!) the price of a base Mustang, the GTD may seem like pure lunacy to some. But there are already at least a several thousand well-heeled Blue Oval fans who clearly think otherwise.

Would you spend $325,000 on a new Mustang GTD? Leave a comment on YouTube and let me know!
