David Lee's Yellow Ferrari 288 GTO
A rare yellow (Giallo Modena) 1985 Ferrari 288 GTO arriving at and leaving the 2024 San Marino Motor Classic at Lacy Park. This car is one of 272 288 GTOs built, all originally finished in red (Rosso Corsa). (The only factory yellow 288 GTO is serial no. 47649, a pre-production prototype repainted in yellow before leaving the factory.) This car was repainted in yellow under its current owner David Lee, Chairman and CEO of Hing Wa Lee Jewelers, whose Ferrari collection currently includes another 288 GTO in red, two F40s, two F50s, two Enzos, and a LaFerrari Aperta.
Well-known Ferrari collector and enthusiast David Lee had long made it known that he planned to complete his "Big 5" collection in both red and yellow. There was always one big elephant in the room - How would he acquire a yellow 288 GTO when there was only one example in existence and it probably wouldn't hit the market anytime soon? Well, where there's a will, there's a way - at least one that involves making some changes to an existing red GTO. I'm assuming this car is repainted rather than wrapped, though Lee has on a few occasions resorted to using wraps to achieve his desired color combinations. Some may consider it sacrilege given the GTO's rarity, but since Lee had no trouble getting another red example (shown in background of video) to make up for the loss, I guess it doesn't really matter. At least this is still a color commonly associated with Ferraris both past and present. And let's be honest, it looks pretty darn cool!
