A brand new 2024 Rolls-Royce Spectre from Rusnak (Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Pasadena) arriving at and leaving the 2024 San Marino Motor Classic at Lacy Park. Introduced in October 2022, the Spectre is the first production Rolls-Royce electric vehicle. It is powered by two electric motors producing a total of 577 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque. The rise of high-end EVs has seen electric powertrains generate performance and power beyond what's reasonably achievable with gasoline engines, but many customers and enthusiasts have been less than thrilled about the lack of engine noise and increased weight. Rolls-Royce operates in a different realm. Its cars are meant to clothe occupants in utmost comfort and luxury, which translates to an extremely quiet ride and a whole lot of weight thanks to all the fine materials and technology. Moving all that weight usually requires a fat V12 that sticks a middle finger to the environment no less than the Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament belittles all the peasants crossing the street in front of it. Rolls-Royce buyers have enough money to not care about fuel efficiency. But come on, nobody in the right mind wants to purposely destroy the planet when there's an option to have just as much fun without doing so. And thanks to the Spectre, that option is now available.
This car is an excellent balance of the old and the new. It carries on the Rolls-Royce tradition of ghostly names and shares the instantly recognizable profile of the Wraith. But the numerous updated design details, from the lights to the wheels, give it a futuristic appearance fitting for its new powertrain. The improved performance, lack of noise, and even additional weight of EV technology have always made Rolls-Royce a perfect candidate. Now that the brand's long-awaited first EV has hit the market, I believe it's one that customers should eagerly embrace - as long as they're willing to fork up half a million dollars!
