Rare 1957 Alfa Romeo 1900 C SS Zagato (Best in Show Winner)
A very rare 1957 Alfa Romeo 1900 C SS (Super Sprint) Zagato, also known as 1900 SSZ, arriving at and leaving the 2022 San Marino Motor Classic at Lacy Park, where it won the Best In Show (Post-War) award, along with the Sports Car Market "Pursuit of Passion" Award and First in Class (Alfa Romeo).
I confess I don't know nearly as much about this car as I hope to. Information varies between sources, but most agree that only 39 Zagato-bodied 1900 coupes were built. There are also different versions of Zagato's bodywork - I don't know if this is because the design changed for specific model years, if different bodywork corresponds to chassis/engine differences, or if Zagato simply offered variations on the bodywork for each client. Either way, what I do know is that this car is incredibly rare, incredibly valuable, and incredibly beautiful. The color is gorgeous, and of all the Zagato 1900 variations I found pictures of, this version, with a chrome line running across each side, sculpted rear fenders, and Zagato's signature "Double Bubble" roof, is definitely the most stunning. Some sources say this example is one of only two or three featuring this design!
Unlike the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, the San Marino Motor Classic has separate Best in Show awards for pre-war and post-war cars. I think it's a great idea; while it makes sense to have just one winner, pre-war and post-war cars are simply so different that it's a bit unfair to judge them side by side, and I've heard well-established car collectors complain that Pebble's award almost always goes to pre-war cars despite the event also attracting some of the most stunning post-war classics on the planet. Well, this event ain't Pebble (despite featuring many of the same cars that had graced the Pebble lawn just a week ago), and take one guess which car took home the post-war Best in Show award. There's no doubt the judges have excellent taste.
