Yellow Lamborghini Urus in Downtown L.A.

A yellow 2020 Lamborghini Urus arriving at and leaving the starting point of Malibu Autobahn's Midnight Cruise in Downtown Los Angeles.

There aren't many SUV's that can pull off yellow as well as the Urus does. Maybe it's because the color simply screams "Lamborghini". I saw another yellow Urus a few months ago while driving with my wife, and she thought the idea of a yellow Lambo SUV was crazy. To be honest, it really is. But so is spending over $200,000 on something you can take your kids to school in. Yet the Urus, which has easily become Lamborghini's best-selling model ever, has proven that there's no shortage of crazy (and rich) people in this world.

Translating a design language used exclusively on sports cars to a big four-door crossover utility vehicle isn't an easy task, and I gotta say Lamborghini did a pretty darn good job. It looks about as "Lamborghini" as an SUV can (especially in yellow!), and with a top speed of around 190 mph thanks to a 641-hp tweaked version of the Audi V8 used in many other high-end vehicles in the VW portfolio, it certainly doesn't miss the mark in performance either. (Who the heck needs to go 190 mph in an SUV anyway!?)

Historically, some people frown upon Lamborghini as a brand trying too hard to be like its Prancing Horse competitor without the motorsports background to back it up. But when it comes to the Urus, Lamborghini definitely beat its competitors with a head start in the game. (The Bentayga and Cullinan are more luxury-oriented, the DBX came over two years later, and the Purosangue - probably the Urus's most direct competitor - has barely entered production.) Complain all you want about exotic car brands diluting their images by building SUV's, but the fact is pretty much everybody is doing it now, even if only out of necessity to stay afloat. Clearly there's a huge market for high-performance exotic SUV's, and Lamborghini jumped into that market well before anyone else did.

What do you think - Did Lamborghini make the right move in adding the Urus to its lineup? Leave a comment on YouTube and let me know!
